Dick Grewcock is a computer geek wanting more out of life. Yearning for a girlfriend, he takes steps to make his dream come true. Vampires are handsome, powerful, and have women falling over them—everything he’s not. Becoming one wasn’t an easy task and he had to find an real vampire willing to turn him.

Christmas Eve, he begins an impossible mission for his boss. Before he starts, a cute spitfire woman just as geeky as him walks into Vampires ‘R Us and life changes. He could have everything he wanted—a pretty girlfriend and a great job—if he could just convince her.

Noelle St. Nicholas is on a mission to save her home and won’t take no for an answer. The only one who can help her is Dick, the nerd staring at her and looking really weird.

Follow the adventures of Dick Grewcock to find true love without losing his humanity.

Dick Grewcock is a nerd, an IT specialist, on the height-challenged side and with a chick aversion scale that rates him as good to have around to fix computer problems but… Well, he falls off that scale on just about every other measure, and not in a good way.

Dick’s lonely, frustrated, snarly, looking down the gullet of another Christmas alone and determined to do something about it. His boss had an answer to remove Dick’s “invisibility” quotient. Becoming a vamp is the snake oil salesman’s solution to everything that ails Dick.

Except… Well, he still doesn’t have the girlfriend of his dreams, the promise of shiny! has yet to materialize, and he’s feeling the equivalent of buyer’s remorse. Dick Grewcock not only wants his money back, he wants his old self back.

Of course, it doesn’t work that way. But what does happen is an oddball job offer from the big man himself and a chance encounter with the girl of his dreams that leads to the night of his dreams. Dick Grewcock’s off and running on a series of adventures that lead him inexorably in a direction that show he’s clearly not cut from the right cloth. Yet Dick delivers, but there are complications.

Dick really, really needed to read the fine print in the Handbook. Not doing so puts his beloved in jeopardy and his chances for happily ever after on semi-permanent hold. When things can’t get any weirder… Well, they do. And the denouement proves to be a fitting end point to Dick’s crazy (mis)adventures.

The main character has some real-world omega guy problems and wears his bristles in a way that reduced his sympathy quotient (for me at least). I wanted to know/feel more from Noelle, the love interest. I found myself asking, more than once, “why him?” The answer comes much later, but a few hints along the way, or more focus on her emotional state, would have made her a more rounded character.

It’s quite a pleasant read that’s partly coming-of-age, partly boy-meets-girl/boy-should-have-read-the-manual. And it has a nice little twist at the end. Not a bad way to spend a rainy afternoon. Four stars.
